چکیده

Abstract Background Species of Sarcocystis are parasitic protozoa in poikilothermic and homeothermic animals. Out the 26 valid species birds as intermediate hosts, none has been reported those order Musophagiformes, such great blue turaco Corythaeola cristata (Vieillot, 1816), which is a bird endemic to Central Western Africa. The examination turacos imported from Africa Republic Czech allowed morphological molecular characterization new . Methods Four private breeder (Czech Republic) underwent parasitological for presence sarcocysts through wet mounts breast, heart leg muscles. Found parasites were molecularly histologically studied by four loci ( 18S rRNA, 28S ITS1 cox1 ) haematoxylin eosin staining, respectively. Results Three out examined harboured numerous breast No macroscopic lesions where observed. Sarcocysts microscopic, elongate ribbon-shaped with wall characterised finger-shaped villar protrusions filled elongate, banana-shaped bradyzoites, 11.87–14.84 × 2.05–2.92 µm size. was most closely related albifronsi , anasi atraii chloropusae rileyi wenzeli sp. isolate chicken loci. Conclusions To our knowledge, this first found musophagiform worldwide. Genetically, S. nov. represents distinct species. Phylogenetic analyses useful predicting potential definitive hosts graphical

Redescription of the sarcocysts of Sarcocystis rileyi (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae).

The intermediate hosts for Sarcocystis rileyi (Stiles 1893) Minchin 1913 are ducks (Anas spp.), and the striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is its definitive host. The structure of sarcocysts from an experimentally infected shoveler duck (Anas cylpeata) fed sporocysts from an experimentally-infected M. mephitis was studied and compared with type specimens from a naturally infected duck. The exper...

Search Image Formation in the Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata).

Blue jays trained to detect Catocala moths in slides were exposed to two types of slide series containing these moths: series of one species and series of two species intermixed. In one-species series, detection ability increased with successive encounters with one prey type. No similar effect occurred in two-species series. These results are a direct demonstration of a specific search image.

Blue jays, Cyanocitta cristata, devalue social information in uncertain environments

http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.anbehav.2015.11.015 0003-3472/© 2015 The Association for the Study of A Animals are selective about when to learn by observing others. Models predict that social information becomes less reliable in uncertain environments, and therefore animals should reduce their use of social information in these environments; however, these parameters are often difficult to manipu...

Visual Detection of Cryptic Prey by Blue Jays (Cyanocitta cristata).

Blue jays learned to respond differentially to the presence or absence of Catocala moths in slides. This detection of the moths by the jays was affected by the background upon which the moth was placed and its body orientation, thus providing an objective measure of crypticity. These procedures are useful for the study of visual detection of prey.

Description of Sarcocystis lari sp. n. (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) from the great black-backed gull, Larus marinus (Charadriiformes: Laridae), on the basis of cyst morphology and molecular data.

A morphological type of Sarcocystis cysts found in one of two examined great black-backed gull, Larus marinus (Linnaeus) (Laridae), is considered to represent a new species for which the name Sarcocystis lari sp. n. is proposed and its description is provided. The cysts are ribbon-shaped, very long (the largest fragment found was 6 mm long) and relatively narrow (up to 75 microm). Under a light...
